MP Tim Uppal celebrates opening of the Kennedale Wetlands facility Thursday, 22 July 2010 On July 22, MP Tim Uppal attended the official opening of the Kennedale Wetlands
facility in the City of Edmonton alongside Mayor Stephen Mandel, and City Councillors
Ed Gibbons and Karen Leibovici.

The Kennedale Wetland project is a green infrastructure project involving the construction of wetlands to provide stormwater quantity control and water quality treatment benefits, through funding by the Canada-Alberta Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (CAMRIF).  Through the CAMRIF initiative, the federal and provincial governments invested a combined $214 million.  The total combined CAMRIF investment, from federal, provincial and matching local government contributions was $321 million.  CAMRIF responded to local needs and priorities by helping to provide cleaner water, better sewage systems, upgraded waste management processes, and safer roads and bridges, and more than 55 per cent of the funding was directed towards green projects.  The governments of Canada and Alberta have taken steps to get shovels in the ground and to flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in Alberta communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.

"The Kennedale Wetland project is an excellent example of how our Government is supporting local infrastructure and investing in the sustainability and viability of rural communities," said Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Sherwood Park, Tim Uppal.
